The bravery of runaway slaves fleeing from their owners in the South can never be doubted. Turning over their safety and well-being to complete strangers could not have been easy. Men and women, abolitionists of all ages and professions, helped to create the Underground Railroad network for use by those persons of color engulfed in slavery. Their journeys were not always easy, or successful, but each successful trek north strengthened the strands holding the massive network together. But what of the families and the lives the runaways left? What occurred to force them to run from their masters and all they had ever known? What broke their sense of security enough to send them fleeing hundreds of miles toward freedom?
