Janet Fellows finds herself in a world that is so different from her reality that only a fantasy can help her escape. Throughout her adult life, Janet has been a schoolteacher in a small Ohio town. In 1820, she is sent to the Sarah Pierce Female Academy located in Litchfield, Connecticut. This school was one of the first education instructions for women in the country. As such it quickly gained a reputation for its excellent curriculum and opportunities. Among the opportunities offered to students at the academy was social teas and dances with the young men attending the first law school in the nation Tapping Reeve's Law School, also located in Litchfield. Many of the top lawyers and politicians in early American history attended this school, and obtained their wives from among the students of the academy. Visa-a-versa, several leading families sent their daughters to the Female Academy with the idea of making connections with the future lawyers and leaders of this country. Janet Fellows, however, is not one of these. She came under a contract with her hometown to study and return in six months, knowing full well that she would be a matron teacher the rest of her life. But fate has a strange twist for her. Among the legal students were two young men who instantly are attracted to the witty schoolteacher. The two, wealthy southerner James Baldwin Mathers and ex-soldier Oliver Block have all the social skills and manners of the proper reputation driven men of 1820. Oliver, however, has a hidden past that makes the other legal students spread rumors about his indiscretions.
