State of a Union
Grant Olson
Due to a manipulated cell phone, Delaney Barwell, a talented but underachieving girl of fifteen, travels back in time to the Indiana summer of 1864, back to the same location from where she came and into the farm life of the Wilbur family. While the father is at war, life unfolds on the Indiana frontier for Delaney and Cassie, her new sister. In order to protect herself, Delaney pretends to be a runaway refugee from the war, inventing a massacred family from over the border in Owensboro, Kentucky. During this summer, she learns the meaning of hard work and what it means to seriously fall for a young man. As the Civil War is chronicled through letters and newspaper stories, the girls experience romance and adventure the likes of which only a war can provide. Hard lessons are learned and great discoveries are made.
