The ideas and institutions of the Republican Tradition are the founding DNA of Western Society. This tradition has shaped the language with which we think about public and private life; it informs and infects both North American liberals and conservatives; it too often determines what we take for granted, the prejudices that frustrate our public discourse and politics, and thus feeds our inability to address our choices effectively. What is the Republican Tradition and how does it understand society? How is it manifest in public and private life? What are the origins of paternalism? How are women and the working class placed in republican ideology? How do "democratic" and "capitalist" institutions come into play? How does "liberalism" differ, if at all, from republicanism?What does any of this have to do with the Republican Party in the United States?
