Shirley Skufca dreams of leaving freezing Colorado winters for a sunny climate. Her dream comes true when she is offered a position teaching speech, drama, and English at Tulare Union High School in California. When she arrives, she finds she will also be teaching two dance classes. She has no idea how to teach them, having had only one modern dance class in college. Besides teaching over a hundred students, she is responsible for directing plays, dance shows, and a speech program. Will she be able to meet this demanding schedule, or be fired and return home a failure? Will her dream turn into a nightmare?Because of her busy schedule, she has little time for a personal life. When her roommate, Joyce, suggests Shirley date Joe Hickman, she hesitates. To encourage her, Joyce says, "Oh, just go out with him. After all, you aren't going to marry him."Shirley agrees to meet Joe, who turns out to be a tall, sexy, handsome young man with beautiful blue eyes. At their first meeting he tells her he is divorced. She admires his honesty, but cannot date him because she is Catholic. They could have no future together. However, she is strongly attracted to him, and when he asks her for a date, she agrees. One date turns into many. Despite her attempts to break up with him, she can't deny her strong attraction to him. Torn between her love for the Catholic Church and her love for Joe, she fears whatever decision she makes will bring only heartache.
