In the summer of 1971, ten-year-old Johnny Athey finds a journal at the town dump written by a US soldier stationed in Vietnam. When reading the journal, Johnny is happily carried away from his abusive mother and finds his one and only hero in the musty pages. But when his mother forces Johnny to throw the journal away, he runs away from home. His search for some peace in his life unfolds in a complex series of adventures with his friends, with some unexpected surprises and consequences.
