Steve Grandinetti's novel SONGS OF A PRODIGAL SON is an adventure filled with realism and magical realism, and the reader goes along with the young musical protagonist Tony Benedetto as he is forced to drive back east from Los Angeles to his birthplace The Bronx, NYC when he experiences a super intense Saturn return triggered by his estranged mother Sofia's death. Not having seen or spoken to her or any of his family for a decade he is inundated with submerged memories as he makes his way across 1992 America. Along with Tony we meet the white spirit dog Ulysses, one eyed witch doctor/ shaman Gene Oso who takes Tony on a little side trip in New Mexico, and Isabella Della Croix his college sweetheart who also shares a side trip with Tony in New Orleans. There's the European midget circus, his former band mates and friends from The Pleasure Pirates, his hit man father Sal and his older brother Eddie, and of course our narrator, and Tony's mentor manager and close friend The Rabbi who also grew up in the Arthur Avenue section of the Bronx and also manages Tony's musical mentor. father figure and friend the Blues legend Moses Law, super roadie Dave P., and we learn about many divergent yet interconnected things. At the end of this deep, intense but fun ride we all come to see we are all prodigal sons and daughters, from ourselves and the divine, we are reminded that we are all made of stardust and to maintain a bigger perspective of this earthly reality.
