The Antidote Dorcas Omowole
The Antidote
Dorcas Omowole
An engaging and fast paced short story by Dorcas Omowole, an environmental advocate born and raised in Nigeria, about Aye. Aye literally translates as the mythical forces that control the running's of the universe. Suspense-filled and thrilling from first word to last word. Aye, the man, embodies these mythical forces. Powers that are all knowing and all powerful. Powers that are not accountable to anyone. In this story Aye gets to an unexpected dead end and he is forced to look back and see where and how he has fallen and make necessary amends. Aye fell terribly ill and the antidote prescribed by the medicine man is one that requires using materials that Aye had abused and squandered in his time of affluence. Aye's health and survival now depends on the benevolence of those he has hurt in the past. Do not bite the fingers that feed you. Do not kill the goose that lays the golden egg. How often we hear these admonitions and how often we forget them! If one good turn deserves another, does one bad turn deserve another? This story is about the earth and echoes our responsibility to care and protect earth. While living in denial has been embraced as a survival mechanism for some, the evidence is all around us and the need to raise the next generation with the urgency of these truths so they are less likely to fall into the errors of "aye-cious denialists" is a priority.
