A troubled drifter (Mitchell) encounters an army veteran and ex-POW (Amelia) who claims to be investigating his late mother's claims of having been raped inside a 1950s insane asylum and delivering a baby there. Though reluctant to return home, Mitchell is compelled to assist Amelia, thereby beginning a journey, not only into his mother's troubled past, but well into his own. Mitchell and Amelia begin to form their own relationship in the midst of infiltrating the asylum, confronting old figures from the past, and coming to grips with shared secrets in each other's lives.
