Gravel Pit Bobby Thornton
Gravel Pit
Bobby Thornton
This is a collection of letters of one woman's mission to bring the good news of our Lord and Savior to a community formally known as the Gravel Pit. The Gravel Pit was a maze community comprised of little narrow roads and Negro shacks that was taken over by Negro squatters as it was officially the city dump. There was a long winding dead-end road leading to the bottom of the pit that encompassed a circle of shacks infested with roaches and rats. There were two beer joints noted for its drunkenness and fighting. Mrs. Beardshaws mission from the Lord was to start a Bible Club at the Gravel Pit to reach the young boys and girls who never went to church or received any spiritual help. Many that she asked to help had never heard of this place, however with her inspiration, their commitment, and a few set-backs she was able to start this Bible Club that continues today.
