Mr. Jacobson was a wealthy businessman. He was blessed with three female children though, but desperately wanted a male child; preferably as the heir to his vast business empire.

His wife - Ruth, perturbed by his desperation and threat to marry another wife; somehow, gave him a male child to save her marriage, at a price which later mortgaged her conscience and also inadvertently plunged the entire family into serious trouble waters.
