The author, Father Dennis A. Quinn, was a Catholic Priest who was an eyewitness to the yellow fever epidemics of Memphis in the 1870s. While admittedly drawing on the exhaustive work of John M. Keating's chronicle of the epidemic, Father Quinn felt another work would be justified centering on the work of the religious orders who laboured among the sick. Like a good shepherd, fear of death could not deter them from the duties of their missions of love and self-sacrifice to the citizens of Memphis whom they served without discernment of racial, social, or economic standing. While Mr. Keating's history certainly evokes much pathos, it is a more lengthy and historical work, while Father Quinn's book is more subjective.
