Bill, a middle aged worker in a glove factory, has been running a press for more than a decade and it has taken its toll on his life, his health and his marriage. When his supervisor's wife falls ill, Bill is offered the opportunity to train as his replacement and, even though he will be working for a lower salary, he jumps at the chance, to the chagrin of his wife. While enduring weeks of torment and humiliation at the hands of his trainer, and in spite of the fact that he senses something awful coming his way, Bill soldiers on.
