Lyrically and almost epigrammatically, the poems melancholy evoke the condemnations and disappointments of youth in the English countryside. Its beauty, simplicity, and distinctive images strongly appealed to Edwardian taste and to many English composers of the early 20th century, both before and after World War I. .. Through their song configuration, the poems were closely associated with that time and with Shropshire itself. Housman was one of the most outstanding classicists of his time and has been rated as one of the best scholars ever to exist. He established his reputation by publishing as a private scholar and, for the strength and quality of his work, was appointed professor of Latin at University College London and later at Cambridge University. His Juvenal, Manilius and Lucan editions are still considered licensed.
