A Sack Full of Pepper Yorgo Piccinaki
A Sack Full of Pepper
Yorgo Piccinaki
Enzo, hardly more than a boy, decides not to follow the wave of emigration, enlists and becomes a soldier like so many of his peers despite knowing that fate could bring him pain and bitterness. The war in which he finds himself and that almost no one wants and in which very few believe, however, reserves something good for him. After being one step away from the end of his short life, he meets a young and beautiful girl from Piraeus with whom he falls madly in love. He marries his Varvàra in Athens without anyone knowing. Thestory changes its course, and to save his hide, Enzo becomes invisible to avoidbeing hunted and to escape a tragic fate. The help of his beloved Varvàra and her Greek family, with all the dangers of that protection, is not enough to avoidhis capture. After an anguished period, he manages with a ploy to conquer the longed-for freedom and to rejoin his love. A story that relegates the bloody passages of the war to the margins, giving more prominence to those sometimes funny moments and the many characters that enrich his days, getting the reader involved almost to the point of being there to witness the various episodes and be a part of them.
