Edward Greenacre's relentless quest for recognition and personal fulfilment drives him and his family northwards. They leave their comfortable home to embark on what Edward imagines will be a better life and a new beginning, but his dreams are soon shattered when his unfailing optimism and good humour are tested to the limit by colleagues who appear to have either too little or too much enthusiasm.
