Come Autumn
Nannette Monson Kern
Margie is, at a very early age, enthralled with her charming first cousin, Richard. As she matures, her infatuation deepens into abiding love, which is altogether reciprocated by the object of her devotion. Richard, a man of true integrity, is from the start her advocate and protector. As unconventional in his thinking as Margie is conservative, he endeavors to convince her that marriage between them is an acceptable prospect, but she is too inhibited by cultural mores to acquiesce, so Richard has no choice but to maintain their platonic relationship. Margie's choice to refuse Richard's love results in heartache and tragedy. Nevertheless, she forces herself to make the best of the path she has chosen, appreciating any small moments of contentment along the way. Then an unsettling discovery again throws her emotions into turmoil, filling her with regret over her life's choices.
