Silence Is An Art

Some of us like to talk a lot, but others talk less. It is not always easy to control what we say. "He who never stumbles over his words is perfect and able to restrain his whole body also" (James 3: 2, 3). James was referring to the brake that is placed on the horses' head and mouth. When the rider pulls the reins, he can guide the animal or make it stop. But, if you lose control, the horse can run wild and hurt itself or injure the rider. Similarly, if we don't control what we say, we can do a lot of damage. The wise King Solomon wrote by inspiration: "When many words are said, it is inevitable to sin, but the one who stops their lips acts with prudence." (Prov. 10:19). If we listen carefully to others and think before speaking, our words will be like those golden apples: precious and of great value. We must learn that Silence is an Art.
