¿What are sexually transmitted infections?They are infections that are transmitted from one person to another during sexual intercourse. They can be the product of more than thirty types of viruses, bacteria and parasites. The most frequent are: syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B and C, HIV. They affect all people: men, women of any age and sexual orientation. How are they transmitted?From one person to another during unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. STIs can be transmitted through blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, or vaginal fluid. What are the symptoms?The main symptoms of STIs are: Injuries in the genital area, with or without pain. Pus secretions from the genitals (vagina and penis) or from the anus. Burning when urinating. Different genital or anal flow than usual. Pain in the lower abdomen. Injury to the mouth or spots on the skin. Genital warts. Before any of these symptoms it is important to make a consultation in the hospital or Health Center. How is it detected?STIs may show no symptoms. Sometimes they are only detected with a medical exam such as blood or urine tests. In the event of pregnancy, it is important that both parents carry out the tests to be able to treat themselves, if necessary, and avoid transmission to the baby.
