Maya Warwick meets handsome, sexy, aristocratic French artist Lucien Desmarais. After a whirlwind courtship and marriage, she realizes that Lucien lives by a different set of rules and in his own reality, where truth is subjective and whatever he wants is his for the taking. When the gallery she finances fails and costs her hundreds of thousand dollars, she wonders if Lucien has his sights set on her resources. To save her turbulent marriage (and her assets), Maya creates a new life in Malpaís, a Central American banana republic touted as the last paradise. Lucien is reluctant to move to such a place, but when he sees the house she built, and finds himself amid a burgeoning art scene, he is content. But when Maya's best friend meets a former gendarme who knew Lucien in France, she warns Maya that Lucien was involved in the deaths of two former lovers. Reluctant to believe this, his nefarious agenda is revealed when he blackmails her, and she realizes everything he ever told her were lies. Lucien tells Maya that he owes money to men who were in the death squads, and this is the straw that forces her to devise a plan to avoid either being killed or losing half of everything she owns to her narcissistic/sociopathic husband.
