The Douglass family was an American Black family that manages to pull itself up financially due to an unforeseen set of circumstances occurring from the death of the paternal grandmother. Because of his determination to build a family legacy and protect his family from what he feels are evil elements in the outside world, Samuel Douglass breaks a cardinal rule of humanity and takes the life of another person to ensure his family's future. Samuel is a driven man who stops at nothing to protect and safeguard his family. From his newly found fortune, he creates a small homestead where he can recreate what his ancestors successfully created on a larger scale many years ago to fortify hundreds of people who had been released from the bondage of slavery. He finds such a utopia in a most unlikely area of southeastern Pennsylvania where his children can grow and prosper and prepare for a world outside the boundaries of their 40 acre paradise.
