What do I need to become a successful music artist? This is a question that every aspiring artist ask themselves at one point in time while pursuing their career. Although there isn't a simple answer there is an answer non the less. I'll explain it this way. A group I knew and sometimes travelled with was on the verge of signing on to a huge show. The promoter of the show was offering a large sum of money for this particular show. The group I knew was one of the 'acts' being considered. They were in negotiations with a talent buyer who was trying to decide between them and another similar group. As the negotiations progressed, they decided to make an offer to do the gig cheaper than the other group. They thought the gig is in the bag. Well, they didn't hear back and decided to call to find out the status of the negotiations so that they could begin to prepare. In their mind, the money was divided up: all they needed was the deposit. They didn't hear back from the talent buyer that day. About a week later, they received communication from the talent buyer stating that the other group that charged more had been chosen because their price was in line with the higher quality they were looking for. They didn't want to risk paying lower and getting lower quality. Their thinking is you get what you pay for. The point? Going cheaper isn't always better and social media likes don't a always tell the true tale of the tape. You need the essentials in situations like this. I provide these essentials in my book. There is a section in my book called, Bonus Pages where I address this issue directly. In line with this issue we are in the social media age where people think popular equals paid. If you do your research you will find that this line of thinking most of the time isn't true. Basically, if you can't turn social media likes into dollars you are just popular and not a professional.
