Modern revolutions in biology have broken the link between sex and reproduction, no longer requiring male intervention. Thus, it is conceivable that males become vestigial, if not entirely extinct, as a species phenotype. These stories explore a world ruled by women, including roots that extend far into the past. The past is always embedded in the future. Social structures, institutions and rituals are generally not replaced by new ones, invented from scratch; instead, they are repurposed in often unexpected ways. Futures are not necessarily dystopias, "bad places," but other places, that might be undesirable, but where we might survive. What should make us apprehensive about the future, dystopia or not, is that it is perceived as normal by those of us who live in it, like a dream from which one cannot awake.
