Joshua Patton is the son of a wealthy family in Tennessee during the Civil War. He enlist in the southern army, despite the protests from his family and his religious convictions, to prove his courage after a childhood incident causes him to question his bravery. Joshua must overcome his self-doubt and rely on his Christian faith in order to survive the war. His family at home in the Elk River Valley have been devastated by the occupation of both armies, deserters, and a gang of bushwhacker led by Calvin Brixey. Brixey and Joshua are both in love with Anna Payne and when she rejects Calvin, he is determined to get rid of Joshua and his family. Joshua must decide between revenge and forgiveness.
