United States Naval Aviation was assigned to protect shipping lanes from enemy submarines along the North American coastline. After the war, transporting civilians by air became a popular and profitable business. Many military-trained pilots purchased airplanes and started scheduled service from 'The Island' to Boston and nearby Martha's Vineyard. Glorious flying days followed with the arrival of barnstormers and other aviators determined to strike it rich in the "Yukon of the East Coast".
