James Morris Webb, born in 1878 in Tennessee and died in 1940, is an American reverend. He delivered a speech in 1921, predicting that a charismatic leader would be proclaimed king of a great African power and would also be the incarnation of the African God. In 1930, Tafari Makonnen was crowned king of Ethiopia (under the name of Hailé Sélassié I er), so this speech became for some a prophecy that is at the origin of the Rastafari movement. In 1924, Marcus Garvey, a black leader, takes up a prayer from Webb's speech ("Look towards Africa, where a black king will be crowned, who will lead blacks to their rescue").
