Think and Write with African American History Prompts Sakr School

This workbook gives high school students the chance to combine critical thinking skills with essay writing. Students will use prompts taken from African American History to practice five essay types:

NarrativeDescriptiveExpositoryPersuasiveCompare and Contrast.

Every section begins with a brief review of the essay type. The essays start with easy questions and increase in difficulty as the book progresses.

Sample Descriptive Prompt: Katherine Johnson excelled at math at a young age. Write an essay describing a school subject that you enjoy.

Sample Persuasive Prompt: Pick an African American who hasn't been on a United States postage stamp. Provide at least three arguments in support of this person's inclusion.

Sample Compare and Contrast Prompt: Compare and contrast the court cases and outcomes of the Scottsboro boys and the Exonerated (Central Park) 5.
