Priscilla or A Harebrained Enterprise
Catherine Bowness
Priscilla takes a position as governess to the widowed Duke of Tallent's three daughters. While riding one day, they meet a mysterious young man when he saves one of the children. Mr Manning soon becomes a favourite with the children and entertains them with stories. One of these takes a sinister turn when they discover a body in a notorious pool. Whose is it and how did it get there? Their efforts to discover the truth lead them to visit the Duke's cousin and heir, who lives nearby. The Duke, longing for a direct heir and desperate to cut out his cousin, whom he dislikes, marries the mother of his only son. They travel to Switzerland for their honeymoon but she, still in love with him more than twenty-one years after his original rejection, is convinced of his indifference. The action takes places some four years after 'Lydia or A Web Unwoven' and readers of that book will meet one or two characters first introduced there. Praise for Bowness's other books includes: 'accomplished with consummate skill by an author who certainly knows how to create a Regency Romance with adventure, atmosphere and great charm'; and 'very enjoyable tale with more substance than the usual regency. I couldn't predict everything that would happen which was a refreshing change. Very well written too.'
