Nobody said college would be easy. There's no more relying on mommy and daddy to make sure you get up on time. No more nosy teachers hunting you down for those missing assignments. No longer boys but men are now in your face, smiling and whispering sweet sounds that make your heart drop to your stomach. New girlfriends that party with you until the sun rises and study with you until the sun fades. Attending a predominantly white institution, Tamara knew she was going to face a different set of obstacles. She knew she wouldn't be accepted with open arms. She was prepared for the cultural shock that was soon to come. She however, didn't plan on falling in love with tough boy Calvin, or getting pregnant by pretty boy Damean aka Calvin's best friend. She never thought she would end up fighting for justice against her rapist, Richie. All the while trying to keep her sanity when she and friends are attacked by a group of white power extremists. That's life as a Black woman right? Keeping your head held high and never fleeting. College is that person who shoves you into the deep end of the pool in an effort to teach you how to swim. With no regard for how you feel or if you're even ready. This is her story. A black girl attending James Mason University, in the heart of Harrisburg, Virginia.
