Upon her return to her native North Carolina, Bobby Lynn is dismayed by the different turns she and her sister have taken in dealing with adult life. While Bobby Lynn is still imbued with a sense of calamity from their early years and has lost her Christian faith, Laura Ann seems to have forgotten large chunks of their childhood, has reformed her rural accent, and become a well-adjusted, religious mother of two in an affluent subdivision. Bobby Lynn is severely disappointed by a couple of dates with eligible bachelors and instead falls in love with one of her sister's married neighbors who is on the verge of marital breakup. With Dennis Epley, Bobby Lynn finds relief from the desolation that's haunted her since her brother's death as a child. She harbors hopes that her faith in this human love of imperfect provenance will one day restore her faith in other ways.
