The end product of familial abuse, James Boudreaux becomes the leader of a gang of bullies that not only abuse students, but teachers and staff members at Wood Oak High School. The school is turned upside down in a series of events that addresses the issues of discrimination, teen pregnancy, abandonment, and other issues that are hidden from those outside the scholastic environment. The book also tells the story of Jane Adams, a young senior forced into prostitution and later abandoned by her mother. She and her five year old sister try to rebuild their lives together as a family in the foster care system.
