When Zoe Zimmerman married Keith Costa, all she wanted in life was a storybook ending. A few months later, she wakes up on a hospital bed. Focusing on herself this time, a wary Monica picks up her schooling where she left off. She enrolls in a university well-known for scientific research and discovers her passion: microbiology. She also works as a lab technician for microbiologist Dr. Karen Watkins, who is studying a new bacteria associated with a local outbreak of leaky gut disease.
As Dr. Watkins and Monica are looking for this bacteria's source, someone tampers with their car, causing a crash that hospitalizes Dr. Watkins and injures Monica. As it becomes clear that someone doesn't want this bacteria's secrets to be revealed, Monica uncovers the truth . . . and she becomes the target now. Meanwhile, Sabrina enters Monica's life again. Will Monica be able to ditch Sabrina for good while staying a step ahead of a genetic experiment gone mad?
