Prior to this Australia supported Great Britain's foreign policy unconditionally but when Japan challenged British and American power in the Pacific, Australia realised that Mother England could not defend Australia as part of her Asia/Pacific Empire and looked to Uncle Sam as a new ally. Australia herself was under threat at a time when her fighting forces were on the other side of the world serving as part of the Imperial armies. This is a coming-of-age novel about a country and its people told through the everyday stories of ordinary Australians who had to grow up quickly when war arrived on their doorstep.
