When Mandeight set sail for the City of Eldemy, he was expecting to complete his magical trials and take his place among the respected mages of the Duchy, but others had a different kind of trial in mind. On his last voyage to the city, Mandeight was involved in the death of a very powerful battlemage and vizier to the Duke of Eldemy, but he was able to keep his involvement in that affair a secret. Now that secret is out, and his former apprentice is about to pay the ultimate price. With Kidal, a former pirate turned ship's captain and Dail, a mysterious assassin who knows a little too much about magic, Mandeight attempts to rescue his wayward apprentice and hopefully save his own neck from the hangman's noose in the process. Along the way, he discovers that a powerful and mysterious necromancer has secretly set up shop in a long-forgotten ruined city.
