I hadn't checked my rear-view mirror. "What the hell?" No, that wasn't the lyrics of the song, but an exclamation of fright and surprise! I jammed my foot on the brake, cranking the steering wheel hard right to the shoulder of the road and was narrowly missed by the blurred shape of a truck that had screeched around me and then pulled right in front of my car! By the time I came to a complete stop, my little white convertible was sitting corner-ways on the gravelled shoulder of the highway, with me hanging onto the steering wheel, knuckles white. I had started yelling a string of obscenities that could make any fishwife proud, my right hand raising to the prescribed position, finger stiffening when it started to sink in just what I was seeing. I clamped my mouth firmly shut. I jerked my arm down, quickly before anybody might possibly see the rude gesture. I tried scrunching down, trying to make myself as little as I could! Vroom! Another vehicle screamed by me."Jessie had just assumed this was another night and another guy. Guess she found out different on both counts!
