We've all done it. We're driving along the Interstate at 65 plus mph when we see the sign: Prison Area - Do Not Pick-Up Hitchhikers. A minute later we're alongside the prison. We glance at the prison out of curiosity and a few seconds later we're gone. In that fleeting second, we wonder what it really is like being a guest of the state. The author knows. He spent more than fifteen years in a women's prison. Fortunately, he could go home at night. His experiences as a correctional officer, correctional sergeant, and counselor provide realistic, positive, and often humorous insights into everyday life in a rehabilitative correctional environment. This work's intent is two-fold: 1. To help free women remain free; and 2. To help incarcerated women find the strength not to return to prison.
