Life continues to change for Dr. Horace Balfour. After signing his beloved boat over to Captain and Mrs. Garwood, to become a river tour cruise ship, he builds a house in town and becomes a partner in the medical practice. Joining the practice is the brilliant forensic pathologist, Dr. Beatrix Howell. All seems peaceful and quiet until eight days after the dedication of the new laboratory. Miss Symington is found dead on the floor of the church kitchen. Dr. Howell proves it was foul play. Then, in quick succession, her death is followed by several more. Together, with Dr. Theo Balfour and his wife Clarice, Phoebe and Harriet, and the ever resourceful Fred, Horace and Theo help the new police chief solve his first murder.
