Something sinister haunts the woods in Weimar, Germany. Prince Orlofsky of Russia is determined to find out what it is by the end of his Christmas vacation. Matters are complicated further by a wanted fugitive, a few werewolves, the premiere of the latest Wagner opera, the reanimated corpse of Felix Mendelssohn, and the arrival of the most powerful vampire in Europe. And everyone seems interested in the disembodied heart of Frederic Chopin. Friends will become enemies. Enemies will become friends. And when the King of the Alders attacks it will take the combined efforts of both vampire and slayer to defeat him. Prince Orlofsky learns many life lessons in Weimar: don't get involved with a novelist, don't step onto the ice, beware of red table wine, and never steal from a vampire's coffin.
