The Population House
Dan Friendly King
The Population House is a unit in a secret organization concerned with controlling world population. The four members meet one afternoon for a monthly review of the state of affairs. Statistics presented by Eddy the physical scientist indicate that even though the growth rate of the world's population is at an all time low, the population today is six billion as opposed to a projected target of two billion. Morgan the group leader voices his concerns about the adopted population reduction strategy. Alfred the third member of the group is concerned about mutations in the virus that was released to reduce the world's population and doubts whether the cures they had at the start could still work today. Eddy the physical scientist is convinced that, of the two methods of treatment, the method of electromagnetic waves can never fail. He argues that this method of treatment and the biochemical treatment both rely on the same fundamental principle, which is resonance. It is clear to all that the population of Africa will be drastically reduced by the virus. The fourth member, Millie the secretary says little during the meeting. After the meeting Millie and Eddy argue on whether in the biblical story of the Walls of Jericho, the walls were brought down by resonance or not. Millie holds that it was the work of God, a miracle, while Eddy is very doubtful. Minutes after Millie leaves the office, Eddy and Alfred are caught up in a bomb explosion, the result of a terrorist attack. While lying on their backs, trying to regain their strength and wait to be rescued, Eddy gives Alfred a funny and powerful exposition on African anthropology, drawing from his experiences in Africa and ends up demonstrating the healing effect of crying. Millie finally helps to rescue the two from the rubble and the two men spend the night in hospital during which time Eddy continues his humourous exposition. In the evening two days later, Eddy and Alfred narrowly escape death from a sniper attack and go into hiding in a dark alley. They contact Millie and happily learn that they were not the intended target. Escaping from death twice in three days makes Eddy to realize who is really important in his life and he finally declares his love to Millie.
