The Island of Doctor Moreau

The crying sounded even louder out of doors. It was as if all the pain in the world had found a voice. Shipwrecked in the south Pacific Ocean, Englishman Edward Prendick awakens aboard a ship where a man named Montgomery and his servant were transporting animal cargo. They soon arrive on an island and more of these bizarre humanlike creatures appear. Prendick perceives a sinister secret to the island after he meets with the owner, Dr. Moreau... Doctor Moreau's highly controversial methods and aspirations conflict with the religious, moral and scientific norms of the day. Today his vivid depictions of the Beast People still strike modern readers with an strange glimpse of the animal in the human, while the behaviour of humans leave us wondering who is the most monstrous after all. Ranked among the classic novels of the English language and the inspiration for several unforgettable movies, this early work of H. G. Wells was greeted in 1896 by howls of protest from reviewers. This is still however a rip-roaring good read.
