Excerpt from Chapter One: The run that would change the course of my life. In 1943, times were exciting. It was World War II. Everywhere you turned, there were signs of the war progressing. I thought I was grown at 13. I could have stayed but I chose to run away when I was in the sixth grade. The choice I made that day changed the course of my life. My brother and one of our friends made a pack that we would all run away together. However, when the time came as planned, we had a split second to decide if we would run or stay. Every day we would have the same routine. We always walked to school; but on this day, the principal just happened to be standing on the steps at the front door of the school. As we approached the school, my brother and his friend chickened out. But instead of focusing on the principal, I looked the other way and kept on walking...
