Lady Jayne is the victim of gossip after a house party held by her parents. Lord Bartholomew Carringdale comes to her rescue with a proposal of marriage. The rumours continue to provide fodder for the society matrons. Still, Jayne and Bart are unaffected as they retreat to Bart's country estate where their marriage of convenience blossoms into a caring relationship. When Bart's grandmother and her companion visit, the women goad and bully Jayne at every opportunity. Bart, unaware of the abuse that his grandmother levels at Jayne, does little to support her. As the visit drags on, Jayne becomes concerned that her marriage will not survive. The companion, Catherine coerces Bart into acting as the host, which eliminates Jayne's access to the duke. Bart, as the escort for his grandmother and Catherine, attends a house party. He is shocked to discover the rumours and malicious gossip that his visitors have spread in the district concerning his wife. Outraged at the treatment of his wife, Bart quits the party and orders them to return to the estate with him. He is stunned when he arrives home to discover that his wife has fled. After evicting the visitors, Bart begins a search to locate his wife. A chance comment from an associate helps Bart to find Jayne, but how can he convince her to return home? Poisoned by his grandmother's accusations, Bart jumps to the wrong conclusion and escalates the tension between his wife and himself. Fay helps to remove Bart's doubts, but now he has to convince Jayne that they and repair their marriage and the loss of trust restored.
