This story is about Homer Miller, a fictional character who lived in Barnesville, Ohio from 1832-1838. Barnesville is a small town in the hills of southeastern Ohio. During the time depicted it was transcending from a pioneer village to a small farm and tobacco-growing center of about 400 people. Some of the characters depicted in the book are real people who lived in the village at the time. Others are fictional. The book is the story of the adventures of a boy becoming a man in troubled pioneer times. The hardships and difficulties and the joy and romance of the era are all woven into the story.
