This is a true story with the names and dates have changed to protect the presumed innocent. Asela's story - Just when we were about to become rich for the first time in our third-world lives, we lost our housing and in so doing, we lost our business. What had happened? Our food was too good! We had too many customers and neighboring businesses started to get jealous! They would come out to the curb, look down the street in our direction, semi shake their heads and turn back inside to their own buildings. Little did we know they were coveting our spot and through scheming, one of them got it. And all of these things would eventually result in our demise... The feeling that we had been left out of the potential for a prosperous lifestyle and would have little more than $250 a month in our pockets in Sri Lanka, the nation where I'm from; but unbeknwnost to myself, one day shortly thereafter, I would be handed the extraordinary opportunity of becoming an American. Did it make any sense that a college graduate of one of the most prestigious institutions in the nation, University of Southern California, was only making the pay of a window cleaner? Did it make any sense that I often worked 12 hour days and did that job for 8 years without even one promotion? Did it make any sense that eventually my boss stole all of the company funds but still wound up a millionaire while I struggled to find work at a temporary agency? This is what you call getting taken and I promise you that the feeling is no different than being robbed.
