This is a reproduction of the original edition of Houghton's History of the 17th Maine, written and published immediately after the war, in 1866. The 17th Maine Regiment had an exceptionally active (and dangerous) role in the Civil War. The regiment was formed in August of 1862. It participated in numerous battles, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg (primarily the Wheat Field on the second day), the Bristoe Campaign, Kelly's Ford, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Jerusalem Plank Road, Deep Bottom I & II, The Crater, and more. finally ending ending with the Appomattox Campaign. Out of a total enrollment of 1, 371 men total fatalities were 370.
