When Vincent Nardi disappears on a trip to Atlantic City, his daughter assumes he has won big and has left to spend the money on women and booze. Sara's mother thinks otherwise, claiming he would never leave her and asks Attorney Doug Harrigan to find him. Harrigan reluctantly agrees and turns to his friend, to Lieutenant Tolcotte of the Boston police, for help. Tolcotte, after some inquiries, agrees with the daughter's suspicions, saying that it won't take long for Nardi to burn through his winnings and come crawling home. Nardi returns several weeks later, unharmed, and with a story about being kidnapped by the mob. The daughter's suspicions appear confirmed. Nardi's wife also doubts his story and Nardi turns to Harrigan to help prove to her it's true. Harrigan again reluctantly agrees but is confronted by Sara who feels he's helping her father cover up. However, when Nardi is subsequently murdered, Sara now has doubts and asks Harrigan to investigate. Although Harrigan doesn't believe Nardi's story and assumes his murder is a random mugging, he finds Sara very attractive and agrees for the third time to help.
