Smarty Marty is a story about the connection of a mother/daughter relationship and how Marty was always asking questions. Very true to life, Marty would always go ask her mother for a definition of a word when she didn't know the meaning of it. Her mother Gloria would always tell her to look it up in the dictionary, which was a skill her mother had taught her. Instead of retrieving the dictionary like her mother would ask her to do, she would ask her mother to please just tell her the meaning. "Mommy" would then recite a sentence with the unknown word so that Marty could use context clues to figure out on her own, what that word meant. Context clues, is what "Mommy" was using to help her learn new words on her own. Teaching context clues in elementary schools is a reading skill that allows students to use words or groups of words to determine the meaning of an unknown word in any passage.
