The Code of Hammurabi Arthur Spencer
The Code of Hammurabi
Arthur Spencer
Code of laws created to standardize the actions of King Hammurabi, stipulating rights and duties for the population and facilitating its administration. However, people were unequal before the law and sentences were stipulated according to the social stratum to which each one belonged. To be able to establish the code, the Babylonian king provided several copies and sent them throughout the empire and influenced several societies in antiquity and in other times. The legal principle established by him constituted one of the cultural legacies that the Mesopotamians left to mankind. Even with the end of the Babylonian Empire, we notice that several civilizations were inspired by this important legal legacy to organize their own set of laws.
