Although there are many war tales that have a romantic interest, not so often is love the major theme. More rare yet within the anglo-english-american imagination is the love of other people strugglingin a war torn world pondered. And even more atypical is a wondering as to how an American far away from home copes with solitude and need in war torn environs where there is barely survival, much less a chance to find companionship and love. A loneliness made all the more poignant for the Afro-American. In this world, which could be almost any place today as more of the world again descends into tribal chaos, we find Jack, alone and cut off from all he has known as his life. His need for love and companionshipa penetration into the open wound of human cultures in the process of destroying themselves.
