The plot begins when the protagonist, a high-class gentleman named Edward Prendick, is shipwrecked in the ocean. A passing ship brings him aboard, where a medic named Montgomery revives him. Montgomery tells Prendick that they are heading to an unnamed island where he works, and that the ship's animals travel with him. Prendick also meets a grotesque and beastly native named M'ling, who appears to be Montgomery's servant. When they reach the island, however, both the ship's captain and Doctor Montgomery refuse to take Prendick with them, with the ship stranded. The crew leaves him back in the lifeboat from which he was rescued, but seeing that on the ship they really intended to abandon him, the islanders feel sorry and end up coming back for him. Montgomery introduces you to Doctor Moreau, a cool and precise man who conducts research on the island. After unloading the animals from the ship, Prendick is taken to a room outside the compound where they live. Prendick is extremely curious about the exact nature of Moreau's investigations on the island, especially after he is denied access to the inside of the compound without explaining why. Prendick suddenly remembers that he had heard of Moreau, who had been an eminent physiologist in London before a journalist exposed his gruesome vivisection experiments.
